About

The Writing Center Internship

The Writing Center internship is for students who want to enhance their own already competent writing skills and who are interested in helping other students do the same.

Interns will train with the director of the Writing Center as well as with experienced writing tutors. They will attend weekly classroom instruction in which they study learning theory, critical thinking, teaching techniques, peer-tutoring strategies, and inter-personal communication skills. In addition, interns will participate in conducting tutorials with students who come into the Writing Center.

Each intern earns 3 elective credits (English 399R) by completing the following tasks:

  • 2 hours in class
    • Class Meeting—weekly, scheduled first week of class
    • Staff Meeting—T, 8 am session with the entire Writing Center staff
  • 6 hours/week in the Writing Center, working with tutors and students
  • Participate in projects, write analytical and reflective essays, teach mini classes

Although successful completion of the internship can lead to employment at the Writing Center, doing so does NOT necessarily guarantee employment as a tutor in the Writing Center. Employment decisions are based upon center needs and available funds.
