Internship Application Process
- Enroll in an Upper-Division Writing Course (English 311 – 316) if
you haven’t already taken one.
- Your application needs to be placed in a manilla folder, accompanied by these four documents:
- Cover sheet. Complete all information on the
form; it is available online or
at the Writing Center front desk (4026 JKB).
- A formal letter of application. Explain why you want to intern in the center, what you
hope to accomplish, and why we should select you for the internship.
The letter should showcase
your ability to produce technical writing.
- Writing samples. Submit two short essays you
have written for other classes. These samples, which will not
be returned, should be examples of your diversity as an academic
writer, showcasing your ability to present an argument, analyze
a text, present a specific point of view, etc.
- Writing history. Write a 3-to-5 page narrative
detailing your experiences, attitudes, and problems with writing.
Use MLA format. This essay should showcase your ability to write
personal texts.
Tutors in the Writing Center can help you review these documents for
inclusion in your portfolio. If you have other questions, call the secretaries
at 422-4306.
Submit your completed application to Penny Bird, 4026 JKB, by the
first reading day prior to the semester you wish to intern.
If your phone number changes,
make sure to update your application.
Interview
Applicants who pass the first screening will be contacted for an interview. These interviews generally last between ten
and fifteen minutes.
Those selected for the internship will be contacted prior to the beginning of the semester. Interns will be required to concurrently enroll in English 399R, a three credit course. This course's scheduling will be flexible with the student's schedule.
