Diapers. Pasty, white diapers, sticky straps flopping on their sides, studded with the Baby Blues dog all around. Diapers and bottles. Pacifiers. And spit-up rags. All part of the paraphernalia of a new dad, anxious, paranoid, and in way over his head. My little girl, Dorothy Mae, was born on Dec. 18th, and I've learned that the new life of a daughter means a whole new life for the father as well. Up until that December morning, my wife and I had thrown ourselves into our work and studies, immersed in a whirlpol of essays, deadlines, overtime shifts, and exams (my wife just graduated in speech pathology). Now that whirlpool, once all consuming, seems like a sidewalk puddle compared with the dirty diapers, the midnight feedings, and the cries that appear to have absolutely no sense or purpose or logic at all but to test her lungs and try our patience. Still, not everything is different: I still hope to go to graduate school, I'm still in love with jazz piano music, and my insatiable addiction to following Trailblazer games and playing basketball hasn't abated in the slightest. But perspectives on these passions become shifted as I shift from a student to a dad. Life never looks so different as when it's seen through the other end of a baby's bottle.
