Advanced Writing

GE Requirements

The Advanced Writing GE requirement can be met by completing any one of six English Department courses below. For in-depth class descriptions including assignments, please visit the links for the individual classes.

English 311, Writing about the Arts and Humanities
English 312, Persuasive Writing
English 313, Expository Writing for Elementary Education Majors
English 314, Writing about Literature
English 315, Writing for the Social Sciences
English 316, Technical Writing

All of the English courses develop advanced reading skills, library or laboratory research skills, knowledge of documentation specific to the discipline, audience analysis, collaboration and peer evaluation, knowledge of appropriate use of support media (visual and aural), the use of drafts and revisions, and conformity to current standards in American English for spelling, punctuation, usage, and grammar. All of the courses are rigorous and demanding, but not impossible. All of the courses have multiple sections with teachers specifically and professionally trained to teach advanced composition.

The Advanced Writing GE requirement can also be completed by taking classes outside the English Department: Philosophy 311, Management Communications 320, Honors 300, Chemistry 391, Art 300, History 200 (plus Hist 490), or Political Science 200 (plus one of the following: PlSc 400, 410, 430, 450, or 470). See the current semester class schedule for a schedule of these writing courses.

Unless stipulated by your major department, there is open enrollment in English 311, 312, 314, 315, and 316. English 313, however, is only for elementary education majors. Some departments designate a particular Advanced Writing course for their majors; you should check with your major advisement center or the Undergraduate Catalog to be sure you enroll in the appropriate course.
