What is the technical communication emphasis?

The Technical Communication emphasis focuses on preparing students in professional writing and editing. Following the coursework outlined below, the student will be adequately prepared to enter the job market in editing or technical writing.

Why take courses with a technical communication emphasis?

The English major develops general skills in writing and reading that can be applied to a number of professional practices. Those skills are particularly applicable to careers in writing and editing. Opportunities for such careers are expanding as businesses and organizations increasingly develop their own publications. In the geographic area surrounding BYU, those opportunities take a number of forms, most prominently as writing and editing within the computer software and hardware industries.

Beyond language, critical reading, and writing skills developed in the study of literature, the English major offers courses that prepare students for such work. By choosing their courses carefully, English majors can prepare themselves as professional practitioners in writing and editing.
