Admission Requirements
B.A. in English or equivalent*
One course in advanced literary theory (English 451 or 452 or equivalent)
Reading knowledge of a foreign language
GRE General Test (the Advanced Literature Subject Test is not required)
Three letters of recommendation
*Students without a B.A. in English must take or already have taken an equivalent
course in fundamentals of literary interpretation and criticism (English 251);
one course each in early British, later British, and American literature;
and an advanced research and writing seminar (English 495 or equivalent).

Submit a BYU Graduate School Application.
Submit a formal research paper; applicants who wish a creative writing emphasis must also submit a portfolio of
their work (20 pages of prose OR 10 pages of poetry).
Include a formal research paper with works cited section; applicants who
wish a creative writing emphasis may also submit samples of their work.
Submit GRE General Test scores.
